Jumping crocodiles
The nature of the fifth continent is unique and unrepeatable. But during a cruise on the Adelaide River, flowing through the Northern Territory of the fifth continent, it may seem that it takes place in the middle zone of Russia, along the ringing from silent banks of the Volga tributaries. This impression disappears when you look carefully around and see big birds of prey soar in the sky and the river waters swarming with giant crocodiles.

Adelaide - the kingdom of the ancient crocodiles

Jumping crocodile cruises

Adelaide is unofficially known as the Crocodile River, thanks to its large population of these ancient reptiles. Here, the so-called Jumping Crocodile Cruise is organised – a cruise called ‘Jumping Crocodiles’, where tourists are invited to see how vast and scary reptiles like torpedoes jump out of the water. When buying trips to Australia, you can choose a Jumping Crocodile tour in the programme with such entertainment or order a ticket directly.

How do the tours work?

How do the tours work

Ridgeback CrocodileThe Adelaide resident marine ridgeback crocodiles are the most significant modern predators. Some of them are up to 6-7 metres long. Their population in the river numbers at least a thousand individuals. Each one is an ideal killing machine, so it is forbidden not only to swim in the local waters, but it is also commanded to come close to the shore.

Therefore, when organising a cruise, everything is done to ensure that every journey along the Crocodile River is safe and exciting.

Excursions are organised in Darwin and are sometimes combined with visits to other tourist sites in the city vicinity. Their implementation works according to the scheme:

  • At the appointed time, tourists are taken by comfortable buses from the hotel to the pier.
  • Here they are waiting for a small, most often two-deck motorboat. The upper deck is open, and the lower deck is glazed.
  • The crew usually consists of a captain, a navigator and a guide. The latter is responsible for making sure that the show takes place.
  • In addition to the show, the entertainment programme includes a tour of the surroundings and lunch at a seaside restaurant.
  • The tour lasts 5-6 hours and ends at the hotel door.

Adelaide cruises are available all year round, but coming here from May to October is better. In November, the rainy season begins. During this time, crocodiles are busy breeding and are less likely to show their faces to people. Therefore, if you want to get to the sixth continent in a particular season, do not forget that the visa to Australia has been issued for quite a long time, and you must take care of it in advance.

Jumping crocodiles

Tourists use local crocodiles. They do not hide; their knobby backs now and then glimpse not far from the boat. The show starts when one of them swims closer.

  • The guide ties an impressive piece of meat on a long stick with a rope and raises it above the water.
  • Birds of prey flock to the boat, hoping they, too, will get something to eat.
  • Some of them’s wingspan reaches two or more metres.
  • The animal, which seemed slow-moving and clumsy before, revives and prepares to jump.
  • Thanks to the rapid movements of its powerful tail, the beast assumes a vertical position and rapidly pushes its body out of the water. There is a loud clang of its giant jaws, and the bait disappears into the bottomless jaws.

It is better to watch the show from the top deck. The view from it is more understandable. The primary safety rule is not to hang overboard. Predators will not attempt to attack the ship, as any object of considerable size is not perceived as potential prey.

Impressions from the Adelaide cruise are unforgettable. The Northern Territories’ wild beauty and cunning nature are felt with poignancy. It is impossible to be satiated with the emotions it gives, and people who have experienced them want to return to the crocodile river to experience them again.
